Boiler Efficiency Database SEDBUK

The purpose of the national SEDBUK Boiler Efficiency Database is to hold energy efficiency performance calculations for domestic boilers fueled by natural gas, LPG or oil.  Although the database will contain other descriptive and technical details as well, all entries must include a SAP seasonal efficiency value.

This allows the general public to compare the efficiency of different types of heating boilers. If you have an old boiler you can be reasonably certain that it is inefficient, wasting money and energy, whether you refer to the boiler efficiency database or not.

Replacing your older boiler with a modern condensing boiler can save you money in the long run.  Modern boilers have energy efficiencies of over 90%, meaning that they convert more than 90% of the gas they consume into heat. Older, traditional boilers may only be 60% efficient wasting 40% of the gas you have paid for! In an age when gas prices are high this significant improvement in boiler efficiency will help to control your heating bills.

The boiler efficiency database contains many technical details on each make of boiler. To interpret this accurately it may be to your advantage to get a heating installer to provide a no-obligation quote for a new replacement boiler advising you of the previous efficiency rating of your existing boiler and illustrating how much you could save in energy costs over the life of the new boiler.

When data is presented for inclusion in the database the Governments Standard Assessment Procedure for Energy Rating of Dwellings states the following certification requirements:-

“Test results must be certified by a notified body accredited for the testing of boilers by an EU National Accreditation Service.  The Notified Body will be required to certify that: “the full load and part load efficiency test results detailed in [insert reference to report on the efficiency test] have been obtained by methods deemed to satisfy the boiler efficiency directive”.

One important consideration is the naming of a heating boiler.  This is the name of the boiler manufacturer or company responsible for the boiler in the UK at the time the boiler was manufactured – as it appears on the boiler casing and/or the owners’ instruction leaflets.  This name must be unique.
