Heating systems can be cleaned
At some moment in the life-time of your fully pumped heating system you will want to flush it. To substitute the boiler or a radiator is a standard reason. Your engineer will normally be performing list has although some householders do have the confidence to try this themselves.
In most circumstances Flushing the central heating is implemented to clean the metal radiators. Before any work is undertaken you need to switch off the central heating pump and central heating boiler. To successfully complete this undertaking you also need to check that no more water enters the gas central heating system.
Your heating system is topped up with water through the expansion cystern. A ball valve mechanism, as used in toilets, is used in the expansion cystern to control the passage of water. This ball valve is a ball connected to an arm that, when elevated closes the valve, which means when the cylinder is full no more water can enter as the valve is blocked. As the water level falls, say through Emptying, the ball drops in the cylinder venting the valve and allowing more water to enter the gas heating system. This is what needs to be stopped when Flushing your heating radiator. Positioning a small plank of wood across the water cylinder preventing the ball valve from moving will stop further water getting in the central heating system.
When you are confident that you are prevented any further water entering the central heating system you should attach a hose pipe to the outlet valve at the bottom of a radiator taking care to ensure the end of the hosepipe is in a drain outside your property. Once you open the outlet valve the water will be able to passage through the hose pipe to the external clean. Obviously, if you want to clean the whole heating system you will need to attach the hose pipe to one of the level metal radiators. You must make sure before you start cleansing or replacing your heating radiator that all of the water has been drained out.
To make your gas heating system empty quicker you should vent any bleed valves on your heating radiators, starting with the metal radiators on the top level and working your way down. Work can commence when all the water has emptied away.
