Pumped/vented systems are the ones that many homes have and they have the most components resulting in potentially higher maintenance costs. A pumped/vented Central Heating System includes components known as a feed and expansion tank to allow for the expansion of water as it is heated in the radiators. The hot water tank performs two functions; firstly, supply hot water to your house, and secondly, provides heat to the heating radiators. The expansion tank has adequate space to accommodate any water expansion that occurs due to heat. The tank is positioned at the point of maximum height, usually in the attic area to create water pressure. It heats the house and doubles as the water supply.
For many years now, pumped/vented systems have been the norm for Central Heating.
A sealed system is now being used in the new houses that are being built. A sealed system, as the name suggests is a closed system so no water tanks are needed. In the absence of water tanks and pipework, the whole system is sealed and vented; here are some prominent benefits of such a system.
- There is no chance of pipes freezing in the attic.
- As opposed to pumped/vented systems there is no need for maintenance work on tanks or pipes.
- Reduces the risk of leaking.
- Unlike pumped/vented systems, air is not drawn through open vents so the possibility of air locks, corrosion and sludge is much lower.
- If necessary, the system can be flushed out under pressure using the main water supply.
The sealed Gas Central Heating system is a fully packaged system with all the controls and safety devices already in place. No tank feeds a sealed system, the supply comes directly from the mains. There is no hot water tank, so water is drawn directly from the main supply.
A pressure vessel containing tightly packed gas can allow a sealed system to have normal fluctuations of pressure; a diaphragm serves as a barrier between the gas and water in the sealed system. If the pressure becomes too high in a sealed Central Heating System; a safety valve will allow water to escape from the system and if the pressure drops too low a valve will open to refill the system with water.
Overall Central Heating Systems offer more value for money as compared to alternative heating systems as they can be very efficient. They also offer you all round control which is more than most heating systems do.
